Department of Kinesiology

Research

Faculty and graduate students in the Department of Kinesiology investigate a wide range of topics in traditional research areas (motor behavior, exercise physiology, biomechanics, exercise/health psychology) as well as areas pertinent to human biomedical research (obesity/diabetes/insulin action, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries, stress/immune system). Department faculty maintain numerous interdisciplinary connections with faculty in other ASU departments (e.g., psychology, bioengineering, anthropology, the School of Life Sciences) and with colleagues affiliated with a number of clinical and research institutions in the Phoenix area (e.g., Barrow Neurological Institute, Banner Health, Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center, Mayo Clinic). These connections enhance interdisciplinary opportunities for faculty and students and strengthen educational opportunities. Numerous specialized research facilities are housed within the department.

The Center for Metabolic Biology is an interdisciplinary group of basic and clinical scientists working together and dedicated to discovering the molecular mechanism underlying insulin resistance. Our research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the American Diabetes Association.
