AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION HONORS
EXCEPTIONAL RESEARCHER, PRACTITIONER AND EDUCATOR

PHOENIX, Arizona -- The American Diabetes Association will announce the winners of its
Cure, Care and Commitment Awards on Saturday, May 2nd at the 13th Annual Diabetes Expo and Update at the Phoenix Convention Center.
 
 The Cure Award is presented to a key researcher who is engaged in basic or clinical research focusing on the treatment, cure or prevention of diabetes and its complications. The recipient of the 2009 CureAward is Lawrence J. Mandarino, Ph.D., Founder and Director of the Center for Metabolic Biology and Professor and Chair for the Department of Kinesiology at Arizona State University. He also holds a cross appointment as Professor in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix in partnership with Arizona State University. Dr. Mandarino’s research interests are mechanisms of insulin resistance.

The Care Award is presented to a key active practitioner of health care, who provides care to individuals with diabetes and their families. This individual is an advocate for best diabetes care practices and provides innovative approaches to diabetes management. The recipient of the 2009 Care Award is M. Antonia (Toni) Verso, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.E. Dr. Verso is a board-certified endocrinologist practicing at Phoenix Endocrinology Clinic in downtown Phoenix. She also serves on several boards and is currently President of the Arizona Chapter of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. In 2008 Phoenix Magazine named Dr. Verso one of the “Top Docs” in Endocrinology.

The Commitment Award is given to a deserving Certified Diabetes Educator who has provided exemplary interdisciplinary programs for diabetes education and is actively involved in providing community based diabetes awareness initiatives. The recipient of the 2009 Commitment Award is Wlatka Peric-Knowlton, NP, CDE. For over twenty years Wlatka has been a tireless advocate for people with diabetes. She is in charge of thediabetes education program as well as the diabetes care improvement program at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center and is Past President of the CAADE (Central Arizona Association of Diabetes Educators). Wlatka always promotes the activities of American Diabetes Association and is a person who exemplifies commitment through her actions.
