Minimum Acceptance Information

Minimum Requirements for Consideration of Application for Program

  1. Degree Earned
    A. Bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution (or equivalent foreign university or college) with a junior/senior GPA of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale, or
    B. Master's degree from a U.S. institution (or equivalent) with a 3.00 graduate GPA.
  2. GRE (verbal, quantitative, and writing)
    A. Scores exceeding the 50 percentile.
    B. Test scores are valid for five (5) years and are a mandatory department requirement.
  3. Desired area of specialization compatible with current program offerings.
  4. Applicants from a country whose native language is not English must provide evidence of English proficiency as indicated by acceptable scores on the TOEFL or IELTS.
    A. A minimum TOEFL requirement set at 550 (PBT) or 213 (CBT) or 83 (iBT), or  
    B. A minimum IELTS with an overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band below a 6.0.  
    C. Applicants who have met one of the following conditions at a regionally accredited college/university in the United States do not need to submit evidence of English proficiency:  
    i. Earned a bachelor's degree or higher, or
    ii. Completed a minimum of 12 semester hours of graduate level study with a GPA of 3.00 or higher, or
    iii. Completed at least 90 undergraduate semester credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher, or
    iv. Completed the American English and Culture Program Advanced Level II and have the recommendation of the Director of the AECP.  

    D. TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid when the test date is within two years of the first day of classes of the semester you are enrolling at ASU.
    E. Applications will not be processed without valid evidence of English proficiency.
    F. Test scores are valid for two (2) years and are a mandatory Graduate College requirement for international applicants without a U.S. degree.
